You have a choice. You can travel back
in time to change something and then return to the present.
The words echoed in my ears as I sat
down. I know what I want to do and feel the urgency to leave
immediately, but I have to stop and think. That's just who I am. I
don't like to rush in. I need to think it through and be sure. My
sister died of leukemia and if I went back in time I could tell her
to get her blood checked. Then maybe they would catch it soon enough
and be able to cure her. Or, better yet, I could do all kinds of
research and take all that information back with me and give it to
her and the doctors so they could save her. But what would that
mean? How would my life change? Most importantly, would my daughter
still be there when I returned to the present? I love my daughter
more than anything but I'd give almost anything to have my sister
alive. What should I do? Do I go back or don't I?

My Short Short Story for the Day
Max walked into the living room as I
set the final piece of food on the table. Placing my hands on my
hips, I turned to him with the sternest look I could muster. “Did
you get it?”
“Yeah.” He swung his backpack off
his shoulder and unzipped the top. “See. What do you want it for
anyway?”
“Well, because we'll need it where
we're going.” I replied with a huff. “Let's see it.”
With a shrug he pulled out the prized
possession. I nearly snatched it out of his hand but quickly caught
myself. “Good.” I slowly took the item from his hand and gently
placed it on the table. “Ok. Let's divide up the food then we can
get going.”
Max reached for a banana but I grabbed
it first. “No. I'll do it.” I opened my backpack and put in
the strawberries, oranges, watermelon, pasta, cookie, brownies,
carrot, lettuce and ice cream.
“Hey, I want some.” Max whined.
“Ok. Ok. Here, you get these
things.” I put the potato, butter, bologna, frozen veggies, goat
soup, bananas and french fry. When he looked away, I stuffed the
rest of the food into my bag and zipped it up.
“Now we can go?” He asked zipping
his bag and slinging it over his shoulder.
“Yes, we're ready.” I said
carefully hefting the pack onto my back and adjusting the straps.
“We're going out into the desert to find water. We may not make it
back alive.”
“Coooool.” Max said.

My Short Short Story for the Day
It was a beautiful morning. The sun
shining, a soft cool breeze and no smog. I drove my van up into the
hills above the smog layer so the air was clear. How blue the sky
looks when the smog isn't blocking it. I parked my van in the dirt
area where a couple other cars were resting after the long drive. I
climbed out and took a deep breath of the freshness. With a smile on
my face I walked across the parking lot to the dirt path and soon
found myself at a small pond. The sun glinted off the green water.
I could see movement a few feet out and quietly watched. Soon a
turtle poked its head up out of the water. I forgot about the camera
in my hand as I watched the turtle swim towards me, climb up on a
branch and stretch out for a sunning. I heard a splash nearby and
followed the sound. I came to a tangle of trees and saw several
ducks paddling around in the shady water. I looked into the branches
and spotted some ducks resting a few inches above the water. I
continued to look around and saw a couple ducks much higher up in the
trees. This time I remembered that my whole point of coming was to
get some pictures. Pulling out my camera I clicked away. Now to get
back to enjoying the beauty before me, surrounding me. Breathe in
the fresh air, feel the warmth of sun on my face. Smile.

My Short Short Story for the Day
“Kick Jack! Kick!” Sam yelled.
“I am! I am!” Jack shouted. “
It's not working!”
“Ok. Ok. Don't panic.” Sam said
taking a deep breath.
“Ok. I'm calm.” Jack said
letting out a slow breath.
“What do we do now?” Sam asked.
“I don't know.” Jack mumbled.
“But we can't stay here, can we?”
“Well, it is nice and warm in this
spot.” Sam replied.
“Yeah, it's a sweet spot, huh?”
“Totally!”
“Well, I guess we could sit here a
while and you know, think about what to do next.”
“Yeah. Yeah. That's a good idea.”
“Ahhhh! Nice day today, huh?”
“Sure is. Lots of sun. No rain.
Perfect.”
“Yup. Perfect.”

My Short Short Story for the Day
The rain splattered down in big plops
on the sidewalk as I rushed across the street. I tugged my collar
closed hoping to block the chill out. 'When will this rain stop.' I
muttered yanking the coffee shop door open and stepping into the
warmth. I walked to my usual spot putting my bags on a chair before
taking my damp sweatshirt off and draping it over the back of the
chair. I paid for my water and made small talk with the girl behind
the counter. 'They are always so cheerful here.' I thought walking
back to my chair. It's nice to be greeted on such a chilly, blah day
with a smile and a friendly word. I sat down, cracked open my water
and took a long drink. Tightening the cap I set the water back on
the chair and pulled out my laptop. Within a few moments it was up,
running and ready to go. I looked at the blank page with my fingers
hovering over the keys. I stared for several minutes. Nothing. I
sat back, took another sip and replaced the cap again. Setting the
bottle down I leaned forward and placed my fingers on the keys.
And......nothing.

My Short Short Story for the Day
My daughter's camera has croaked, but the good news is she'll be getting a new one from Santa. The bad news is, my stories will be with my photos instead of hers until the new year. Look for a new short short tomorrow.

My Short Short Camp 36 Story for the Day
I
blushed against my will as my eyes settled on Shane's face. He
looked so cute up there. They did a dance routine to a Van Halen
song. It was pretty funny. I crossed my fingers hoping they
wouldn't make a mistake and they didn't. Well, if they did, at least
it wasn't obvious. Cinder and I stood up and cheered as they took a
bow. After the show everyone stayed in their seats waiting for the
announcement of the winners.
A
short time later the camp director walked onto the stage and tapped
the microphone a couple times. “This has been one of the best
groups of kids we've ever had here.”
All
the kids cheered, whistled and clapped enthusiastically. After
several minutes they finally settled back down.
“Everyone
did a great job today. You've been working hard all summer and it
certainly shows. It was a very difficult decision to pick the top
three acts. All of you should be very proud, parents and kids
alike.” Everyone clapped again. “Yes, you all deserve a round
of applause. But now, without further ado, in third place is Cabin
4.”
Jonas
and Shane jumped up high-fiving each other before going on stage with
the rest of the boys from their cabin. The audience cheered as each
boy received a ribbon.
“In
second place is Cabin 10.”
The
girls of Cabin 10 hurried up on stage giggling and blushing and
hugging each other.
“And
the winner of this summer's talent show is...Cabin 12”
Cinder
shot out of her seat with a loud whoop. I sat frozen in place, too
stunned to believe my ears. Cinder grabbed my hand and dragged me up
onto the stage. I was still in shock. We actually won. I couldn't
believe it. As we received our trophies the audience stood and
cheered. I finally managed to smile. Cinder put her arm around my
shoulder and smiled waving her trophy.
I look
around and my eyes meet Shane's. He smiles and shows me his wrist.
It takes me a moment but then I recognize the friendship bracelet I
gave him. I smile remembering his note is still in my pocket. Then
Cinder gives me a big hug and I know that no matter what, we'll
always be best friends.
My Short Short Camp 35 Story for the Day
As the
girls from cabin 15 went out onto the stage I paced back and forth
too nervous to watch. We decided to do a dance routine to my
favorite Bette Midler song. Cinder and I had suggested the song to
the group and everyone had readily agreed. Then we all worked
together to create a dance routine. We had practiced so much that I
could do it in my sleep but now, at this very moment looking out at
all the faces watching us, I felt terrified and my mind blanked.
“Cinder.
Cinder! What if I forget the moves?” I said as tears glistened
in my eyes.
“Melina,
it's ok. Don't worry.” Cinder put her arm around my shoulders and
leaned her head against mine. “You know the routine. You'll be
fine. Just forget about them out there. Think only about the dance
moves.”
“But...”
Panic was swelling up in my throat.
“Stop.”
Cinder put her hands on my shoulders and made me look her in the
eye. “You CAN do this.”
I took
a deep breath and let it out very slowly. “Ok. I'm ok. Just lost
it for a minute. I'm ok now.”
“Good
cause we're on.” Cinder's smile chased away the rest of the fear.
As
soon as the music started my mind blocked all else out except the
dance moves. I hit every mark and didn't trip over anyone. When the
song ended and the curtain fell, we cheered and hugged. We hurried
off the stage giggling in relief and sheer joy.
“We
did it! I can't believe it. We really did it!” I was shocked and
thrilled. I'd never danced so well before in my life.
“Yeah!
We're awesome!” Cinder yelled.
“I'm
so happy it's over, though.” Alice said sighing loudly.
We did
a group hug then made our way to the front row to watch the rest of
the acts. The other acts blurred together until Cinder elbowed me
sharply.
“Ow!
What?” I said rubbing my ribs.
“Jonas
and Shane are up.” Cinder whispered pointing.

My Short Short Camp 34 Story for the Day
I was
repacking my stuff when Cinder came in looking a little flushed but
happy. I elbowed her and she only laughed. About an hour later our
parents arrived and everyone rushed to meet them. There were hugs
and laughter and talking. My parents asked about my arm but I
shrugged it off. I didn't want my last day at camp to be sad so I
ignored the discomfort. I took them to my cabin first to show them
where I slept and introduce them to the other girls. Then we went to
the craft hall to see all the art projects. Next I took them to the
lake and told them about our team jumping in that super hot day and
how much fun that was. I let my gaze wander across the lake and down
the sandy beach to rest on the docks. The docks where Shane kissed
me just last night. I started to blush at the memory and quickly
turned away.
“Let's
go. I'll show you the soccer field.” I said hurrying ahead hoping
the blush would disappear before my parents noticed.
As we
walked across the field I told them about my team and how Cinder and
I got to be together. The happiness turned to sadness but I brushed
it aside.
“Oh,
look. We should head to the auditorium now. Almost show time.” I
grabbed my mom's hand tugging her along. My dad laughed and fell in
step with us.
I led
them to their seats then went around to the back looking for the
other kids from my cabin. It wasn't too hard to find them as Cinder
was jumping up and down waving her arms like a maniac. I laughed and
made my way through the pack of kids.
“When's
our turn?” I asked.
“Oh,
man, we have to go second. Can you believe it?” Alice whined.
“I
know. That stinks but at least we aren't first.” Cinder said.
“Besides, this way we get it over with pretty quick then we can
relax.”
“That's
true.” I said feeling the butterflies start to flutter around in
my stomach.

My Short Short Camp 33 Story for the Day
The
next morning the entire camp was buzzing with anticipation as our
parents would be arriving soon after breakfast. Cinder and I arrived
a little early for breakfast, got our food and sat down at a table in
the corner. We wanted to talk but neither of us knew what to say.
We watched as the other kids laughed, talked and had fun, enjoying
the last day of camp. I was picking at my pancakes when Jonas and
Shane walked in. Cinder saw them, too and waved them over. They
were a nice distraction. They walked us back to our cabin and when
we neared the fork in the path, Jonas and Cinder kept walking towards
the boys cabin while Shane and I stopped in front of the girls cabin.
I suddenly felt very shy.
“Here.
This if for you.” He hands me a note neatly folded into a square.
“Don't read it now. Wait until you get home. Please.”
His
smile was so sweet and his cheeks had the faintest hint of a blush.
I never liked any boy more than I liked him right at that moment. I
grinned at him like a fool for several moments before I had a
thought. “Wait here. Don't go.”
He
nodded. I rushed into the cabin and tore through my bag. “I know
it's in here somewhere.” I mumbled finally deciding to dump my bag
onto my bed. I could clean it up later. Here it is. I hurried back
out and nearly ran into Shane who had moved over to lean against the
railing of the steps.
“Oh,
sorry.” I said. “Here. I want you to have this. It's...it's a
friendship bracelet. Cinder and I really got into it this past
year. It was very popular among the girls. Anyway, this is my
favorite one and I want you to have it.” I quickly tied it around
his wrist.
“Thanks.
It's cool.” Shane said.
My
heart was pounding a mile a minute. Without another thought I kissed
him on the cheek and rushed back up the steps. I stopped at the door
and looked back at him. He was still leaning on the railing and
smiling up at me. “See you later.”
“See
ya.” I said and went into the cabin.

My Short Short Camp 32 Story for the Day
I
could feel his hand so close to mine and I wished with all my might
that he would reach over and take it. My mind was racing with
questions, thoughts, feelings that I wanted to share with him but I
couldn't make the words come out. My cheeks started to heat up under
the blush that wouldn't stop. I had to say something, anything.
This might be the last time I ever see him. Of course that thought
just made my heart flutter faster and my mouth go dry. Hurry, say
something. Now's your best chance. I turned to face Shane without
moving my hand, still hoping to accidentally brush against his.
Focus Melina. It was a struggle but I brought my eyes up to meet
his. He smiled and I relaxed a little and smiled back. I took a
deep breath and was about to speak when he leaned ever so slightly
towards me. I froze. Could he be...? Is he trying to...? Really?
Right now?
Shane
hesitated for a moment then leaned over and kissed me. It was quick
but enough to make me forget whatever it was I was going to say. I
stared at him in shock, pleasant shock. He smiled a little then
looked down at his hands. I couldn't believe it, he was being shy.
I smiled at the thought. How sweet. I looked down at my hands still
smiling.
“That
was...nice.” Shane's voice was soft.
“Yes.”
I wanted a witty comment but nothing came to me. “You're really
nice.”
Really,
that's the best I could come up with. I wanted to smack my forehead.
“You,
too.” Shane gave me a quick look.
“Hey
you two! What're you talking about?” Cinder clomped down the dock
squeezing in between us.
“Nothing.”
We said in unison then burst out laughing.
Cinder
gave me a look but kept quiet.
“We
should head back.” Jonas said.
We
nodded and walked slowly down the path back towards the camp. Nobody
spoke except for a quick goodbye at our cabin.
I
didn't know what to say to Cinder. There were too many feelings and
not enough words so we lay silently in our beds until sleep came.

My Short Short Camp 31 Story for the Day
We sat
on the beach watching the other kids running down the dock and
jumping in. The spray shot into the air with each cannonball. The
sun was still out but a chill crept into the air. I picked at the
sandwich for a while but eventually put it back in the bag. Everyone
was having fun, enjoying their last few days of summer, except for
me. My best friend was moving away and it just wasn't fair.
“Hey!
Stop that!” Cinder's laughter broke into my thoughts. Shane and
Jonas were splashing her with water. Then Jonas reached out to grab
her but before he could Cinder raced up the beach and flopped down
next to me dripping all the way.
“Hey!
You're getting me wet!' I said trying to sound mad.
Jonas
collapsed on the sand in front of us breathing heavy. “I think I
could fall asleep right here.”
Shane
sat down on the other side of Jonas. “Looks like everybody's
leaving for the barbeque.”
It
wasn't long before the beach was empty except for the four of us.
“Should we go?” I asked.
We all
looked from one to the other. Cinder grinned and soon Jonas was,
too, followed by Shane and then me. The barbeque was a summer end
event they had every year. The cooks went all out and the kids loved
it. It was the highlight of the summer. But this year, it just
didn't feel that important.
“Well,
what should we do, then?” Cinder asked.
Jonas
stood up and brushed the sand off his hands. “I don't know about
you but I'm going to...” Just then he scooped Cinder up and rushed
towards the lake. She shrieked, kicking and swinging until the fell
in a heap on the sand only a few inches from the water.
I
stood up dusting my shorts off, laughing at my friend and wishing my
arm was all better. Shane fell in step with me as I walked out onto
the dock. I settled in at the end careful not to jostle my arm. I
dangled my feet into the water and didn't mind the icy coldness
nipping at my toes.
“I
wish summer wasn't almost over.” Shane spoke softly.
“Me,
too.” I said putting my hand on the dock wishing I had the nerve
to look at him.

My Short Short Camp 30 Story for the Day
Cinder
and I walked to the mess hall. It was too late for lunch but too
early for dinner. We were hoping maybe the cook was still there and
had some leftovers or something. I wasn't really hungry anymore but
I didn't know what else to do. The end of summer was looming over
us. When we leave camp tomorrow it'll be more than just goodbye, see
you tomorrow. It'll be goodbye forever. Tears blurred my vision and
I stumbled. Cinder caught me before I fell.
“Thanks.”
I said swiping the tears away.
“It's
going to be ok.” Cinder smiled.
“But
what if we never see each other again? What if you get too busy?
What if you find a new best friend? What if you forget about me?”
I couldn't stop myself.
“It's
going to be ok.” Cinder put her arm around my shoulder and started
us walking again. “We'll stay in touch. I promise. We can even
have sleepovers
sometimes,
too. And who knows, we could always go to the same college.”
I
stopped and looked at Cinder. I stared at her for a long time. “I
sure hope so.”
“You'll
always be my best friend Melina.” Cinder laughed. “There's no
one else quite like you.”
I
laughed, too. When we got to the mess hall Jonas and Shane were
sitting outside.
“What
took you so long?” Jonas said with a grin. He held up a brown bag
in triumphant.
“What's
that?” Cinder asked.
“Since
you two missed lunch we thought you'd be hungry. Just didn't expect
to sit here so long waiting.” Jonas held the bag out to us.
“Thanks.”
I said looking to Jonas and then Shane. I couldn't stop the blush
when Shane smiled at me.
“Let's
go down to the lake.” Cinder said taking the bag and leading the
way.

My Short Short Camp 29 Story for the Day
The
nurse worked quickly wrapping my arm and putting it in a sling. The
pill she gave me worked great, making the throbbing stop.
“You
have to move this as little as possible. And you can't sleep on it.”
She secured the sling and helped me off the table. “And take
these only when you absolutely need them. If the pain gets to be too
much, come get me.” This last part she directed at Cinder.
“We
will.” Cinder took my arm like I was an invalid. “Thanks.”
I
could only smile at the nurse as we walked out. “I'm hungry.” I
said pushing aside how tired I was.
“We
have to go see the director first. Then we can see about food.”
Cinder lead me to the director's office which was only a few doors
down from then nurse's office.
Our
knock was quickly answered. “Come in.” The director was seated
behind his cluttered desk with a phone in one hand. He motioned us
to sit down. “Yes, I will. Just a moment. She just walked in.”
I took
the phone from him and held it up to my ear. “Hi.” I cleared my
throat as it suddenly felt very dry.
“Honey,
are you ok?” My mom's voice was wonderful.
“Yes,
I'm alright.” I relaxed a little.
“Are
you sure you don't want us to come get you?” I noticed the concern
in my mom's voice now which made me start to doubt my decision.
I
looked at Cinder and her smiled reassured me. “No, I'll be ok.
It's only for one more night. Besides the show is tomorrow and I
can't let everyone down.” I said hoping I sounded more sure than I
felt.
“Alright.
But call us anytime if you change your mind. Ok?” I knew it was
hard for my mom but she didn't press any further.
“Thanks
Mom. I will.” I smiled. “I love you.”

My Short Short Camp 28 Story for the Day
I
tried to focus on what they were saying, but the haze was clouding my
mind. I just wanted to close my eyes for a minute but every time I
did, Shane would squeeze my hand. I opened my eyes to see him
smiling at me. Cinder was pacing and talking but I couldn't focus on
her words. Eventually Jonas returned with some people and they
loaded me on a stretcher and carried me back to camp.
“It's
definitely broken. We're going to have to take you to the hospital.”
The nurse said. “And we need to call your parents as well. They
can meet you at the hospital and take you home.”
“No!”
I yelled in panic. “We still have one more day. I can't go home
yet.” I turned to Cinder pleading with her.
“Does
she have to have a cast today? Can't you give her something for the
pain and she can go to the hospital tomorrow?” Cinder looked from
the nurse to the director and back to me. “Please. It's just for
one more day.”
“Please.”
I said. “I don't want to go. Not until after the show. Please.”
The
director looked to the nurse and they stared at each other for
several moments. “Is there anything you can do?” He finally asked.
“Well,
if she's very careful, then...” The nurse began.
“I
promise. I'll be careful. I'll do whatever you ask.” I said.
“Ok,
ok.” The director smiled. “Do what you need to do.” Then
turning to me, he continued. “Come see me after. We still need to
talk to your parents.”
“Ok,
I will.” I released my breath. “Thanks.”
"Swallow
this.” The nurse said handing me a pill and water. “It'll make
you feel better.”

My Short Short Camp 27 Story for the Day
I
landed with a thud and the pain shot through my arm. I knew
something wasn't right but I couldn't seem to think straight.
“Melina?
Melina?” Cinder was kneeling next to me. “Can you sit up?”
I
stared at her dumbly wishing the fog in my brain would clear. “Huh?”
“Come
on, we have to get her back to camp.” Shane was kneeing on my
other side now.
“I'm
ok.” I pulled myself to a sitting position and nearly passed out.
“Whoa. Maybe not.”
Jonas
was standing in front of me. “I'll run back to camp and get help.”
“Yeah.
Go ahead. And hurry.” Cinder said. “It's ok Melina. Just
relax.”
Jonas
took off running and I closed my eyes. What happened? I tried to
piece it together but the pain was too much and now I was feeling
sick to my stomach. I just wanted to be home in bed.
“Her
arm is definitely broken. We should check to see if anything else
is.” Cinder's voice was full of confidence. I had always admired
her take charge attitude.
“Ok.
We shouldn't let her sleep either. Should we?” I could feel
Shane's hand touching mine and I so desperately wanted to enjoy it.
“Yes,
you're right. Did she hit her head? I can't remember.” Cinder
touched my cheek. “Melina, open your eyes.”

My Short Short Camp 26 Story for the Day
I
stretched up reaching for the nearest branch and braced my foot against the
tree trunk. With a heave I pulled myself
up and started to climb. I concentrated
on my footing and handholds ignoring how high up I was getting. After several minutes I was to the top. With a proud smile on my face I looked down.
“Woohoo!” Cinder yelled waving her arms.
Shane
and Jonas both were smiling and clapping as well. I felt great.
My heart was beating strong but not from fear. I did it.
I made it to the top. Silly
curse. What did they know about it
anyway. I looked around at the beautiful
view.
“Hey
Melina! Come on down now!” Cinder waved to me.
“Ok. Ok. I’m
coming.” I said full of confidence.
I
grabbed the tree trunk and stretched my foot down to the nearest branch. Once it was firmly in place I stretched my
other foot down and moved my hand as well.
Reaching I grasped the next branch and again stretched my foot
down. As I settled my foot I stretched my hand and a
sudden crack preceded the feeling of floating.
I didn’t even have a chance to grab at anything. It all happened so fast.

My Short Short Camp 25 Story for the Day
The
guys led the way out of the mess hall with Cinder and I close behind. We stopped just outside of camp and Jonas
pointed out where we were headed. When we
started walking again Cinder and Jonas were ahead, talking animatedly. I walked next to Shane and kept sneaking
looks at him. There was so much I wanted
to say but I was too nervous. We had
been getting along so well, so why did I still feel so nervous with him? Time was running out and there was a lot I
didn’t know about him. Where did he
live? Where did he go to school? Would he write to me? Would he forget me?
As
these thoughts were running around inside my head Shane took hold of my
hand. I looked up in surprise. He gave me one of those grins that caused a
thousand butterflies to take flight in my stomach. I smiled but quickly looked away hoping the
blush wasn’t too obvious.
Too
soon we reached the tree. It was gnarled
and twisted, looking like something from the scary part of a fairy tale. We stared up at it for several minutes.
“Ok,
who’s first?” Jonas said looking to each
of us in turn.
We
all stood in silence until I couldn’t bear it any longer. My heart was pounding so hard but I felt this
sudden urge to do something out of the ordinary. I stepped forward. “I’ll go.”
“Are
you sure?” Cinder stepped up next to
me. “You’re a great climber and all but
this tree is…is…weird.”
I
smiled. “I don’t believe in curses
Cinder. I’ll be fine.”

My Short Short Camp 24 Story for the Day
Friday
was our free day this week since Saturday was the big show and Sunday we were
all heading home. Early Friday morning
Cinder led us to the boys table.
“So,
are we getting together today for one last adventure?” Cinder asked.
“Yeah,
definitely.” Jonas said.
“Any
place in mind?” I asked.
“Well,
I heard about this crazy old tree that nobody has managed to climb.” Shane said.
“That
doesn’t sound too tough.” Cinder stated.
“Ah,
but this is no ordinary tree. It has
very few branches and it’s…alive.” Jonas
whispered in a spooky voice.
Cinder
and I laughed.
“No,
seriously. It’s cursed. Something bad will happen to anyone who tries
to climb it.” Shane said.
“No
way!” I said almost believing him.
“Ok,
don’t believe me.” Jonas said with a
shrug.
“Yeah,
right, we’ll be there.” Cinder said. “Just to prove you wrong.”
“Great!” Shane and Jonas replied in unison.

My Short Short Camp 23 Story for the Day
In
the morning Cinder looked like her usual cheerful self but I could see a touch
of sadness in her eyes. I never was good
at hiding my emotions so all day I had to endure the same question over and over.
“What’s
wrong Melina?” Our soccer coach asked at
practice.
“Nothing. I’m fine.”
I said not wanting the attention.
I did catch Shane’s eye for a moment and he gave me a quick grin that I
couldn’t resist and found myself smiling in return.
The
next few days were a busy blur with final soccer practices and final rehearsals
for the summer end show. And of course
all campers were expected to help decorate the hall for the show. We were all so tired by evening that we fell
asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow.
Thursday morning we were up early eating a light breakfast because it
was the soccer championship game today.
The
game was close but we won in the end.
Shane made the winning goal with my assist. Afterwards we celebrated by throwing
ourselves into the lake fully clothed. We
changed then ate a quick lunch before heading to the Hall to finish decorating. Flopping into bed that night, we were so
exhausted that even Cinder and I didn’t have enough energy for our usual chat. Only a few more days until the end of summer.

My Short Short Camp 22 Story for the Day
Sunday
we hiked around to the other side of the lake and were sitting on the
rocks. Cinder and Jonas were a little
ways away talking with their heads close together. I looked over once but quickly averted my
eyes from their intimacy.
Shane
and I were sitting with our legs nearly touching. I was looking out across the lake when he
casually moved his hand slipping it easily into mine. I didn’t dare look at him for fear I’d blush
a deep scarlet red. He gave my hand a
little squeeze after a moment and I looked over. He smiled without saying a word. He had a great smile. I couldn’t help but smile back. Then we looked out across the lake again,
sitting in silence for several minutes before resuming our talk about
soccer. Our fingers remained linked
together until it was time to head back to camp.
That
night my mind drifted to the afternoon and I thought about the warmth of Shane’s
hand as it held mine.
“Melina?” Cinder whispered.
“Yeah?”
I replied.
“We
only have a week left.” She said.
“I
know.” My smile faded away as the weight
of it settled onto my heart
“What
are we going to do?” Cinder asked.
“I
don’t know.” I said.

My Short Short Camp 21 Story for the Day
After
our hike that day, the four of us decided to meet every Sunday morning and to
explore the surrounding area. The summer
was flying by and we were having the best time of our lives. Cinder and I carefully ignored the fact that
she was moving at the end of summer.
We’d be going our separate ways.
I hated the idea so I pushed it out of my thoughts.
Instead
I turned my thoughts towards Shane who was just about the most perfect boy. He was so cute and taller than me, which
didn’t happen very often. He loved
soccer and basketball. He was a good
runner but didn’t run all the time like I did.
That was ok, though, because he ran track and liked it well enough. And most of all, he actually liked me. He listened to me talk and shared things
about himself. I’d never spent so much
time with a boy. I even stopped blushing
all the time, well, for the most part.
Cinder
and Jonas were getting along really well, too.
I liked Jonas. He seemed to be
able to match Cinder’s self confidence and wit, which was a first. Most boys were in awe of Cinder and more than
a little intimidated by her quick and clever thinking. All in all, I was pretty happy as our final
week of camp approached.

My Short Short Camp 20 Story for the Day
“That
was awesome!” Shane said moving to stand
next to me.
I
blushed as I met his eyes. “Thanks.”
“What
was that?” Cinder asked coming over to
stand directly in front of me.
“Wow! I’ve never seen a girl run like that
before.” Jonas said coming up to stand
beside Cinder.
“I
don’t know.” I said smiling like a fool. “I just felt like running fast.”
Cinder
stared at me in wonder for another moment then shook her head. “I don’t know about you guys but I’m
starving.” Cinder said linking her arm in
mine and turning me around. Shane and
Jonas grunted in agreement and we all walked to the mess hall.
That
night I lay in my bunk thinking about the day.
It had been fun hiking with the guys and even a little exciting thinking
about the possibility of seeing some bones.
But when we didn’t find any, I was very relieved. I just didn’t like to think about death. The beauty of the view from the cave opening
was amazing. I don’t know why I felt so
energized after but the run felt great.
I know I could easily have hurt myself running that fast but for a short
time I felt invincible.
“Hey,
Melina. You awake?” Cinder whispered from the bunk above.
“Yeah.” I said.
“That
was kind of crazy today, huh?” Cinder
said.
“Yeah,
it was.” I said.
“You
were running like…like nothing I’ve seen before.” Cinder said.
“I
know. It was weird, huh? I just couldn’t help it. It was like I wasn’t in control.” I said.
“Like I was watching it happen.”
“It
was pretty cool, though. You kicked
butt!” Cinder laughed.
“I
did, didn’t I.” I said laughing too.
“Shhhhhhhhhh!”
Cinder
and I giggled again before settling down. I wish I could have seen the expression on
Jonas and Shane’s face when I whipped past them but my imagination would have
to do. I fell asleep soon after with a
smile still on my lips.

My Short Short Camp 19 Story for the Day
“It’s
beautiful.” I said softly.
“It
is pretty amazing.” Cinder agreed.
Jonas
and Shane nodded silently. None of us
felt like leaving right away. The relief
of not finding bones washed through us and the breathtaking beauty of nature
revived our happiness at being alive and carefree.
“I’ll
race you to the bottom.” Jonas said
punching Shane in the arm as he took off.
“You
cheat!” Shane said scrambling after him.
“Hey,
wait up.” Cinder yelled close on their
heels.
I
stood alone savoring the joy of the moment.
Then jumped into motion and chased them down. I felt so full of energy racing down the trail,
letting my legs run as fast as they wanted.
I passed Cinder first and raced headlong over branches and around rocks
with reckless abandon. I didn’t even
think about it, I just ran like there was nothing else in the world. Soon I caught Jonas who had slowed down
significantly. Then there was just Shane
ahead of me. I zeroed in on his back and
ran as hard as I could. He was fast but
not a runner like me. I’d been running
since I was 7. My heart, lungs and legs
were pumping in unison like a well oiled machine. I wasn’t even breathing that heavy when I
finally caught him. We were almost to
the outskirts of camp. He slowed a
little to look back and I shot past him.
I don’t know why but I just kept running until I reached the beach. The dock was empty and the beach was,
too. The sun was starting to set so
everyone was probably at dinner. I stood
on the beach looking out at the water while my breathing quickly returned to
normal. I felt great. I’d never run so fast in my life and the burn
I felt was that of having pushed myself to the limit. I closed my eyes and let the gentle wind dry
the sweat from my face. I listened to
the animals rustling around in the nearby woods.

My Short Short Camp 18 Story for the Day
Jonas
stepped forward. “I’ll go since I’ve got
the flashlight.”
Turning
on the light, he stepped into the cave.
Shane followed and Cinder and I were just behind them. We ducked a little at the entrance swiping at
spider webs and pushing vines aside. The
beam of light was small. Just enough to
make us feel a little better about not being in total darkness but in a way it
also made it more scary wondering what might be lurking just outside the ring
of light. We kept very close and
quiet. After a few moments we reached
the back of the cave. We all breathed a
sigh of relief at having discovered nothing sinister.
“Well,
it was just a story. Maybe they cleared
the bones away a long time ago.” Jonas
said.
“Yeah,
they certainly wouldn’t leave a dead body here, right.” Cinder replied.
“No,
thank goodness.” I mumbled.
“We
should probably start heading back.”
Shane said.
Shane
took the lead on the way back shining the flashlight as we went. It wasn’t as dark this time because we were
heading towards the outside light. I was behind Shane, then Cinder and Jonas was in the
back. Once we were back outside on the
shelf we noticed the view.

My Short Short Camp 17 Story for the Day
The
path narrowed causing them to hike single file.
The conversation died out as they focused on the trail ahead. The sun was rising steadily and sweat began
to trickle down my back. I love the
outdoors and working up a good sweat. I
would’ve preferred that it was only Cinder and me. Shane was behind me so I couldn’t keep
looking back without him beginning to wonder what was up. I also had to force myself not to be self
conscious. We had been hiking for about
an hour when we reached the ledge where the cave was situated. There was a dirt slope that led up to it on
one side but there wasn’t much to hold on to.
Jonas went first and Cinder followed mimicking his movements. I climbed up next slipping a little bit near
the top but catching myself quickly.
Shane came up last and had no trouble.
We stood at the mouth of the cave for several quiet moments.
“Hey,
aren’t we supposed to throw some rocks in or something. You know, in case of snakes.” I said.
“Yeah,
yeah, I heard that, too.” Cinder said.
Jonas
bent over to pick up a handful of rocks and tossed them into the cave. After several minutes passed we looked to
each other. I picked up another big rock
and chucked it as hard and far as I could.
It made a pretty loud thunk. The
others smiled and picked up some big rocks as well. We threw the big rocks in for a bit seeing
who could make the loudest thunk.
Finally, we stopped staring into the dark again.
“Well,
who wants to go first?” Cinder asked.

My Short Short Camp 16 Story for the Day
“See,
I told you they were down here.” The
voice was loud breaking abruptly into the silence.
Cinder
and I both jumped but quickly recovered when we saw it was Jonas and
Shane. Cinder stood up brushing her
pants off and turning to face them. I
was a little slower in getting up, shy about meeting Shane’s eyes. His smile brought a blush to my cheeks and I
looked away quickly intent on dusting my pants off.
“So
you want to go for a hike?” Jonas asked.
“Sure.”
Cinder replied. “Where to?”
“There’s
supposed to be an old cave up there on that mountain.” Jonas said as he started to walk. Cinder fell in step beside him.
“Hi.” Shane said once I finally dared to look at
him again.
“Hi.” I replied trying to smile casually.
“It’s
supposed to be haunted, you know.” Jonas
said.
“Oh,
yeah?” Cinder gave him a sideways
glance.
“Yeah. The story is that some old prospector was
panning for gold but even thought winter was approaching he refused to
leave. He was afraid someone else would
come in and steal all his gold so he camped out the entire winter. That cave is where he lived for months, in
the snow and ice and freezing cold.”
Jonas talked as we hiked. “It was
summer before anyone ventured up there and all that was left were his
bones. And that’s not all. There was a knife sticking out of his chest.”
“No
way.” Cinder said. “Who killed him?”
“That’s
the mystery. No one knows.” Jonas climbed over a fallen tree and helped Cinder
while Shane offered me his hand. “He was
seen in town getting supplies towards the end of fall but then no one saw him
again. A deputy was out tracking a
cougar when he came across the cave. He
thought the cougar may have holed up in there for the winter but when he went
in, there was Old Jim or what was left of him.”
“Oh,
that’s horrible.” Cinder said.
“Did
they find the gold?” I asked.
“Nope. Never found any gold in the cave or in the
stream.” Jonas said.

My Short Short Camp 15 Story for the Day
Sundays
were the best because we had the whole day to do whatever we wanted. That first week ended with Cinder and I both
very happy. So many things had happened
in that first week it felt like a whole summer’s worth. We were up early for a change and walked down
to the beach, stretching out on the dock to look out across the lake. It was so quiet and peaceful. We sat in silence for a while.
“It’s
been really fun here.” I said.
“Yeah. I thought I’d be sad, you know.” Cinder said.
“Yeah,
me too.” I tried not to show my sadness.
“I
can’t believe we won’t be in school together next year.” Cinder finally said after a long silence.
“I
wish you could live with us.” I
said. “Maybe my mom and dad wouldn’t
mind.” I took hold of the idea and
turned to Cinder with hope filling my heart.
She
sat up and faced me with a smile.
“That’d be great but I’d miss my family too much.” She lightly punched me in the arm. “Besides, who’d want to share a room with a slob
like you.”
I
laughed in spite of myself. “Yeah. I
just thought….”
We
both turned to look back out across the lake again. The birds chirped and an occasional fish
jumped out of the water leaving behind a ripple on the surface.

My Short Short Camp 14 Story for the Day
“Cool
practice today, huh?” Jonas said.
“Yeah. It was so hot today I was gonna melt.” Cinder took another bite of her sandwich.
“Oh,
I know. It was horrible.” I added.
When
I looked up Shane was looking at me and smiling. I blushed bright red and quickly looked
away. The others continued to talk but I
was feeling more and more self conscious as I noticed how clingy my clothes
were and that I was starting to shiver a little.
“Can
I take that for you?” Shane asked.
I
looked up and saw him holding his hand out for my plate. I smiled and handed it to him. “Thanks.”
I said.
We
all stood up and waited while the guys took the dishes back inside. Cinder nudged me and grinned. “We have to go practice for the talent
show.” Cinder said nodding toward the
music hall.
“Yeah,
we’re scheduled to practice tomorrow.”
Jonas said stepping up next to Cinder.
Shane
fell in step with me and we all walked to the music hall in no particular
hurry. “Have you guys decided what you’re
doing yet?” I asked Shane giving him a
quick sideways glance.
“I
don’t know. We’ll probably just go with
The Police or Van Halen or something.”
Shane said shrugging his shoulders.
At
the music hall we stopped and Cinder grabbed my arm. “We’d better get going. See you guys later.”
We
waved and went inside moving to the window near the door to watch them walk
away. We giggled as Jonas punched Shane
in the arm, then Shane punched him back which lead to a punching match as they
walked away down the path.
