My Short Short for the Day

The elves looked at each other then back at Santa as their cheeks turned a bright pink. Puggy rushed over to Santa wagging his tail happily. Santa picked him up and untied the garland as he walked to the tree. Sheepishly Eddie held up the red ribbon to Santa who quickly tied it back onto Puggy making a neat little bow. Then he scratched Puggy behind the ear one more time before setting him back in his little bed.

Now you stay Puggy and be a good boy.” Santa said.

Puggy woofed then circled in his bed three times before curling into a ball and promptly going to sleep. Eddie and Lou walked over to Santa with their heads down and shoulders sagging.

Well, boys, let’s get this tree fixed up.” With a wink of his eye Santa set the tree back to the way it was and the elves watched in wonder. “I think that’s enough excitement for one Christmas Eve. Don’t you?”

Yes, Santa.” The elves said in unison as they hopped into Santa’s red sack.

Once they were back on the sleigh Santa picked up the reins and called over his shoulder. “Hold on boys. Here we go!”

With all the gifts delivered to all the good little boys and girls of the world it was time for Santa to head back to the North Pole for a good long nap. When the sleigh touched down at the North Pole, Mrs. Claus and the other elves were there cheering. Santa waved as he deftly climbed out of the sleigh.

Without turning around Santa spoke just loud enough for only Eddie and Lou to hear him. “Next time you need help, all you have to do is ask.”

Eddie and Lou relaxed. “We will Santa. Thanks!”

Santa stood up looking at all the elves then turned to look at Randy who had stepped forward to take the reins. “I believe Eddie and Lou could use some help with the cookies.”

Randy’s jaw dropped in disbelief as Eddie and Lou stood up with their arms full of brightly decorated Christmas cookies. They smiled as they handed out the cookies saving the best one for last. Turning to Santa, Lou handed it to him speaking softly. “Merry Christmas Santa.”

Ho, ho, ho!” Santa’s belly jiggled merrily. “Merry Christmas indeed!”

My Short Short for the Day

Just then the top of the sack opened and Puggy peeked into the bag. Lou giggled as Puggy licked his face and snorted.

Shoo! Go on! Go lay down!” Lou whispered trying to be stern but Puggy ignored him.

We have to take him back to his bed before Santa comes out.” Eddie stated climbing out of the sack.

Lou followed him giggling as Puggy jumped around him trying to reach his face. They got to the dog bed and put Puggy back in but something wasn’t quite right.

Where’s the red ribbon Santa tied around his neck?” Eddie asked looking around.

Here it is.” Lou said holding up a ribbon. Quickly he tied it around Puggy’s neck and petted him. “Look Eddie, I put the ribbon back on Puggy.”

Eddie looked up smiling and holding a red ribbon in his hands. “I don’t know what you have but this is the ribbon…” Eddie’s jaw dropped as he looked at Puggy’s neck. “Lou, that’s the…” Suddenly Puggy jumped up and ran away from Lou. “…garland.” Eddie finished as Lou watched in surprise while Puggy raced around to the back side of the tree.

Quick! After him!” Eddie rushed after the little dog. Lou followed after Eddie.

Puggy looked back at the two elves with mischief in his eyes. He raced around the tree circle after circle as the garland unwound from the tree, shaking the tree and knocking ornaments on to the presents below. After circling the tree a few times Puggy stopped to face the two exhausted elves. Eddie halted abruptly and Lou rammed into him.

They held their breath for a moment then Eddie stuck out his hand towards Puggy. “Here boy, come here. Good doggy.”

Puggy wagged his tail as he slowly walked toward Eddie. Just as Eddie leaned forward to grab the little dog, Puggy stepped to the side and raced past the elves. Again the three raced around the tree as ornaments dropped off and the tree threatened to topple over. A noise came from the kitchen and all three froze.

Ho, ho, ho! What have we here?” Santa said standing in the doorway. “Not another mess boys. I thought you might have learned after the last one.”

My Short Short for the Day

Shh! You're making too much noise Lou.” Eddie scolded turning around to face his friend.

I’m sorry Eddie, I’ll be quiet.” Lou said sheepishly.

Eddie turned back peering into the living room again. Okay, Santa isn’t looking so let’s go.” Eddie crawled under the table cloth with Lou right behind him and Puggy close on his heels. At the kitchen doorway, they hesitated then rushed into the living room and behind the big couch. Puggy was right behind them panting and snorting.

Keep that dog quiet.” Eddie said.

Shh! Puggy. Shh!” Lou whispered. Puggy tilted his head at the sound of his name then began to lick Lou’s face again. Lou giggled in delight until Eddie gave him a stern look. Both Lou and Puggy stopped what they were doing immediately.

Eddie peered around the couch and motioned Lou to move up next to him. See, Santa is almost done arranging the presents. As soon as he goes into the kitchen we’ll sneak into the sack.” Eddie explained.

Okay Eddie.” Lou said nodding in agreement. Just then Puggy rushed past them towards the tree.

Oh, no.” Eddie said grabbing at Puggy as he shot past. They both held their breath as Puggy ran up to Santa.

Ho, ho, ho. There you are. I was wondering where you had wandered off to.” Santa said merrily as he tied a bright red bow around Puggy’s neck and set him down on a soft dog bed under the tree. Puggy snuggled into his new bed and Santa petted him on the head before walking to the kitchen. Once he had disappeared through the doors, Eddie and Lou rushed over to the red sack and climbed in.

What about Puggy?” Lou asked.

He has to stay here.” Eddie said.

Oh.” Lou said sadly. “I wish I could keep him”

But then you would be taking away a child's present and that child would be very sad on Christmas morning.” Eddie explained patting his friend on the shoulder.

Yeah, I guess you’re right Eddie.” Lou said. “I wouldn’t want to make any children sad.”

My Short Short for the Day

Carefully Lou climbed to the edge of the chimney and jumped in. He landed on the floor and scrambled out of the way just as Eddie came down. They stood up, dusted themselves off and looked around. Santa was by the tree deftly placing presents around it and humming Christmas carols. The two elves snuck over to a nearby chair and gave one last look toward Santa before rushing into the kitchen. They grabbed a couple cookies and stuffed them into their pockets turning to head back to the living room when they heard a noise. Quickly they ducked under the table.

There was a thick, floor length table cloth that hid them but also made it impossible to see who had entered the kitchen. After a few tense moments they heard a funny noise, like loud sniffing. They looked at each other curiously wondering what that odd noise was. It seemed somewhat familiar but they couldn’t quite place it. It grew louder and the table cloth moved. They started to get nervous as the noise went around the table and stopped at a slit in the cloth. The cloth swayed as something pushed against it and suddenly a small, squishy faced Pug puppy pushed through the cloth. The elves sighed in relief as the little dog looked at them with a happy smile and friendly eyes. He pushed through the rest of the way, hurrying over to meet the two elves. He sniffed Eddie and licked his face then turned to Lou. Lou loved animals and was as happy to meet the puppy as it was to meet Lou. He laughed as the Pug jumped on him and licked his face. He pet his wrinkly head and the dog wagged his curly tail in delight. Eddie looked at the tag around its neck and read the name.

Puggy.” Eddie said. The little dog turned to Eddie in response to its name. He tried to lick Eddie again but Eddie stopped him by scratching behind his ear. The puppy immediately started tapping his hind foot in happy response.

Aw, he likes you Eddie.” Lou said with a big grin. Puggy turned back to Lou and nudged him for another pat on the head. Lou was happy to oblige. He laughed as Puggy’s tail wagged so hard it nearly knocked him over. He was snuffling and snorting the whole time and Lou was very happy. Isn’t he the cutest little dog you’ve ever seen?” Lou gushed.

Yeah, yeah, cute.” Eddie said nervously peeking under the tablecloth. “Now we need to think about getting back to the living room before Santa leaves.”

Lou giggled as the dog continued to lick his face and jump all over him. Eddie looked around trying to locate Santa.

My Short Short for the Day

Phew! That was close, huh Eddie?” Lou asked.

Shhh, keep your voice down.” Eddie reminded him.

Do we have enough cookies, yet?” Lou's eyes lit up with hope.

Let’s see. Bring out your cookies and I’ll count them.” Eddie said. “Yes, it looks like we have enough for all the elves. Now put them back in your pockets and hurry. Santa should be landing soon.”

They hurriedly put the cookies back in the bags and stuffed the bags in their pockets. They finished just as the sleigh landed on top of another roof. They quietly snuck out of the bag and around to the back of the sleigh before Santa noticed. As soon as Santa disappeared down the chimney they relaxed.

Eddie, I’m tired. Can we go home now?” Lou whined as he slumped to the ground.

We’ll be heading home soon.” Eddie said sitting next to his friend and keeping an eye on the chimney. Then he heard a crunch and turned his head quickly to see Lou munching on a cookie. “Lou, no! Don’t eat that!” Eddie yelled.

Huh, what?” Lou said as he continued to eat.

The cookie! Stop eating the cookie!” Eddie said in panic. “Oh, no! Now we’ll have to go back down for another cookie.”

Lou brushed the crumbs away from his mouth with his sleeve. “Sorry Eddie, I didn't mean to.”

“Ok, ok, but whatever you do, don’t eat anymore cookies.” Eddie stated.

Lou nodded. “I won’t, I promise.”

Just then they heard a noise coming from the direction of the chimney. They rushed around to the other side of the sleigh and waited for Santa to put the sack on the seat. He climbed into the front seat and picked up the reins. Quickly the two elves slipped back into the sack and braced themselves for take off. Both kept silent as they flew to the next rooftop. After Santa slipped down the chimney, the two elves walked to the edge and peered in.

Are you ready?” Eddie asked looking at his friend.

Yes, I guess so.” Lou replied.

My Short Short for the Day

They slipped through the doorway and rushed over to the couch. Eddie peeked around the edge to watched as Santa settled down at the table. The kitchen door swung gently closed and Eddie turned to Lou but he wasn’t there. He looked around until he saw Lou near the tree walking towards a cat.

Lou!” Eddie whispered loudly looking from Lou to the kitchen. “Lou! Stop!”

Lou looked at Eddie but didn’t stop moving and accidentally stepped on the cat’s tail. He quickly picked his foot up but it was too late. The cat howled and raced towards the tree.

Oh, no!” Lou looked sheepishly at Eddie then raced toward the tree. The cat leapt into the tree knocking decorations to the floor but the presents cushioned their fall and none broke.

Come on Lou, help me get these back on the tree before Santa comes out.” Eddie scrambled to pick up the decorations.

The cat hissed at the elves who nervously scurried around trying to re-decorate the tree, but with each move the cat made, more decorations fell off the tree. A noise came from the kitchen and Lou and Eddie perked their heads up and froze.

I think that was Santa.” Eddie stated.

Oh, no! What do we do?” Lou asked nervously.

Eddie tried to think for a moment but the kitchen door started to open. “Quick, into the bag!” Eddie yelped.

They both dropped the decorations they were holding and jumped into Santa’s bag. They held their breath as they heard footsteps approaching.

Oh, dear.” Santa said in wonder. “Now, what happened here?”

The two elves nervously huddled together as they heard the tree rustle. There was a loud ‘Meow’ as the cat jumped down from the tree and landed in Santa’s arms.

Ho, ho, ho. So that’s how the decorations got knocked off.” Santa said with a smile, petting the nervous cat until it calmed down. “Here you go, now run along and let me put these back on the tree.” With a twinkle of his eye, the decorations returned to their proper branches so that it looked as it had when he first arrived. Another soft ‘Ho, ho, ho’ and Santa picked up his bag and returned to the roof. He placed the bag on the back seat and gently slid off the roof and into the air. The elves let out a sigh of relief as they felt the cool air of the outdoors.

My Short Short for the Day

The elves continued with this plan for several more hours until their pockets overflowed with Christmas cookies. The sleigh landed gently on a rooftop and just before Santa turned around to grab his sack, the two elves quietly slipped out and rushed behind the sleigh. After Santa climbed down the chimney, the two elves paused for a few moments before looking down the chimney to see if it was clear.

Are you ready?” Eddie asked.

Do we have to go down again?” Lou whined.

Yes, but I think this should be the last time.” Eddie replied patting his bulging pockets.

Okay.” Lou said climbing to the edge of the chimney. With some help from Eddie, Lou jumped down the chimney. There was a rug in front of the fireplace and it cushioned Lou’s fall, but he was unable to get out of the way before Eddie landed on him again. They stood up and dusted themselves off while looking around for Santa.

Okay, there he is, over by the tree.” Eddie pointed at Santa. Then he continued to look around. “I think the kitchen is through there.”

Okay.” Lou replied.

They quietly slid along the wall towards the kitchen until they reached a big wooden desk. They paused for a moment before dashing across the room to the kitchen door. Quietly they slipped through the door and immediately spotted the cookies on the table.

We’ll have to grab the cookies and get out of here before Santa finishes putting the presents under the tree.” Eddie stated. “With no tablecloth for cover, we can’t hang around.”

Lou nodded his head. The two elves climbed up onto the table and stuffed the cookies into their pockets, and as usual, leaving one cookie behind for Santa. Then they climbed back down and peeked out the door.

Santa's finishing with the stockings now.” Eddie said looking at Lou. “Let's go.”

Lou nodded and kept close to Eddie.

My Short Short for the Day

When I say go, we rush into the kitchen and get under the table as fast as possible.” Eddie explained. “The table cloth looks long enough to hide us.”

Lou's smile dropped away. “But what if Santa catches us?”

Don’t worry. Just do what I say and you’ll be fine.” Eddie stated.

When Santa bent over to pull more toys from his bag, the two elves rushed to the kitchen and slid under the table cloth.

Phew! We made it!” Eddie whispered.

I don’t think I can take much of this racing around.” Lou panted.

Eddie patted Lou on the back and smiled. “You stay here, I’ll grab the cookies.”

Eddie peeked through the table cloth then quietly slipped out. Lou could hear a few noises above him then Eddie slipped back in with a handful of cookies.

“Here, give me the bag.” Eddie said. “Santa is almost done.”

I get the red one, right Eddie?” Lou asked licking his lips.

Yes, here you go.” Eddie handed his friend the cookie slathered in red frosting and green and red sprinkles. Eddie quickly packed the rest of the cookies into the bag and zipped it closed.

Mmmm! That was good! Can I have another one?” Lou begged.

We’ve got to go.” Eddie said sneaking another peek under the table cloth “Santa's going to leave without us if we don’t hurry.”

Aw. Just one more.” Lou whined. “Please?”

Okay, here, you little piggy.” Eddie said tucking the cookies into his pocket.

Lou nodded his head as he quickly munched the cookie leaving only a small smudge of frosting on his chin. His wiped it with his sleeve before looking up at Eddie.

Santa is coming so be very quiet.” Eddie explained.

But I thought you took all the cookies?” Lou asked.

I had to leave him one. He needs some energy for the long night ahead.” Eddie replied. “As soon as he sits down, we’ll rush back to the living room and jump back in the bag.”

Okay Eddie, I’m ready.” Lou said. “But won’t he notice his bag is a little heavy?”

If you wouldn’t have eaten so many cookies we wouldn’t have to worry.” Eddie replied peeking under the table cloth.

But….but…” Lou stuttered.

Let’s go. Follow me!” Eddie whispered tugging Lou’s sleeve. They slipped under the table cloth and darted to the living room. As soon as they spotted the red sack by the fireplace, they climbed in and closed the opening.

Ooooh, I don’t feel so good.” Lou moaned.

Quiet, you don’t want to get caught do you?” Eddie scolded.

No but those cookies had too much frosting on them. I feel sick.” Lou moaned holding his belly. They braced themselves as the bag started to move.

Brr! We must be outside again.” Eddie whispered rubbing his hands together for warmth. The bag rustled and settled down on the back seat as the sleigh swiftly glided off the rooftop and into the night air.

My Short Short for the Day

After a short time the sleigh landed gently on a snow-capped roof. Just before Santa turned around, Eddie nudged Lou and they quietly slipped out of the bag and rushed behind the sleigh. They held their breath as Santa picked up his bag and climbed out of the sleigh. With a twinkle in his eye he slipped down the chimney and out of sight.

I can’t believe Santa didn’t catch us.” Lou said peering around the edge of the sleigh. “It was really smart of you to think of wearing outfits that look like presents.”

Well one of us has to have some brains or our lives would be pretty dull.” Eddie replied motioning Lou.

Gee, you’re the smartest elf in the whole north pole!” Lou said grinning from ear to ear. “What are you doing, Eddie?”

We’re going down there.” Eddie smiled as he leaned over the edge of the chimney opening.

How?” Lou asked looking over the edge.

Jump, of course.” Eddie replied.

But won’t that hurt?” Lou asked.

Santa has been doing it for years and he’s still laughing.” Eddie replied climbing up onto the edge.

Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Lou shrugged.

Okay, you go first and I’ll be right behind you.” Eddie patted Lou's shoulder.

Okay.” Lou said as he jumped feet first into the chimney. Lou landed on the floor with a bump but before he could stand up something landed on top of him.“Ouch!”

Eddie stood up with a grin and brushed himself off. “See, that wasn’t so bad.”

It would have been better if you hadn’t landed on me.” Lou said rubbing his back.

Shhh! There’s the kitchen through that doorway.” Eddie said pointing. “See?”

Lou’s eyes lit up at the sight of the plate heaped high with Christmas cookies. “I get the red one.” He said in a loud whisper.

Okay but be still. Hm? Now where did Santa go?” Eddie asked scanning the room.

Maybe he’s in the bathroom.” Lou said eyes wide with innocence.

No, Santa doesn’t go to the bathroom.” Eddie replied. “Oh, there he is on the other side of the tree. Be very quiet and follow me.”

Okay Eddie.” Lou said.

Shhh!” Eddie said putting his finger to his lips.

My Short Short for the Day

Okay Lou, when I say go, we rush….Lou, hey Lou? Pay attention!” Eddie whispered loudly.

Huh? What?” Lou sputtered turning to his friend.

Lou, you have to pay attention or Santa will catch us for sure.” Eddie said.

Right, sorry Eddie. I’ll pay attention. I promise.” Lou replied.

Okay. When I say go, you run to the sleigh and climb into the back.” Eddie said. “And remember, be quiet.”

What about you?” Lou asked.

I’ll be right behind you. Just be ready to move when I say go.” Eddie patted Lou on the back.

Santa walked across the room buttoning up his bright red coat with fuzzy white trim. His cheeks were a little pale but as soon as he opened the door and the chilly wind hit his face they turned a wonderful rosy red color. He laughed warmly and stepped outside. The elves and Mrs. Claus hurried to the window to watch the sleigh take off.

Now, Lou! Go!” Eddie said pushing Lou toward the door.

Lou hesitated with his eyes wide with excitement.

Go you silly elf!” Eddie said grabbing his arm and pulling him through the door a second before it shut. They skidded to a halt and hid behind a small shrub as Santa climbed up onto his sleigh.

What do we do now?” Lou asked.

Shhh!” Eddie gestured. “This way.”

When Santa turned toward the window to blow Mrs. Claus a kiss, the two elves climbed into the sleigh and snuggled down into the sack of presents. Santa let out a jolly laugh as he picked up the reins.

Hey, move over, your foot is in my face!” Eddie whispered shoving at Lou.

Sorry Eddie.” Lou moved aside. “Do you think Santa saw us?”

No, he didn’t see a thing.” Eddie stated puffing up his chest with pride.

With a jerk, the sleigh took off into the night sky. The elves were forced against the back of the seat. They grabbed onto each other in an attempt to steady themselves. After a few minutes the sleigh leveled off.

Wow, this is fun.” Lou whispered peeking out at the sparkling stars.

Yeah, sure is Lou.” Eddie whispered back. “But we have to be quiet so Santa won’t hear us.”

My Short Short for the Day

The chilly wind swirled the snow across the ground as the stars twinkled in the night sky. There was a flurry of activity inside the warm glowing house as happy, little elves packed toys into Santa’s bright red sack. Outside the reindeer danced around Santa’s sleigh eager to be on their way. Upstairs Santa finished his dinner while Mrs. Claus bustled around the kitchen. She quickly prepared a snack for Santa's long journey. Mrs. Claus laughed cheerfully as Santa pushed away from the table and patted his full belly.

Ho, ho, ho! Time for me to go.” He said giving Mrs. Claus a hug before heading downstairs to the workshop.

With all the activity, two elves go unnoticed as they leaned against the back wall. Eddie is thin and tall for an elf. His eyes sparkled with mischief as they darted around the room. He always enjoyed a good challenge, so when Randy proposed a dare, he couldn't turn it down. He had to sneak onto Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve and bring back enough Christmas cookies for the rest of the elves. He prided himself on being the most clever and daring elf in all of the North Pole so he quietly watched as Santa made his way down the stairs.

Next to Eddie stood a short, chubby elf named Lou. He always had a good natured smile on his face. Eddie had been his best friend forever and he admired him for being so smart and brave. He could remember all of their past adventures. Like the time they spent the night in a polar bear cave. One day a little polar bear cub had wandered into the village. He looked so scared and all the elves agreed that someone had to help him find his way home. So Randy had dared Eddie to take him home without any help from Santa. Of course, Eddie immediately took the challenge and before Lou knew it, he and Eddie were putting on their warm winter coats and heading off towards the polar caves. No elf had ever ventured that far before. They found the bear’s family and the mother was so grateful, she gave them cookies and cocoa. It was very dark and a storm was brewing outside so she insisted they spend the night. Early the next morning, after a hearty breakfast of pancakes and more hot cocoa, they started back home. She even let them ride on her back all the way to Santa’s village. The other elves watched in awe as the two slid off the polar bear’s back and calmly strode into the house. There was never a dull moment with Eddie.

My Short Short for the Day

Willa lifted the book from the shelf, hugging it to her chest as she slowly made her way back to the couch. Once she had settled down, she placed the book on her lap and lifted the heavy cover. A smile creased her face as she lovingly touched the photo.

“Oh, Matt. Such a handsome young man.” Willa moved her finger across the page to rest on another photo. “We were so young, so in love.”

Willa continued to flip through the pages, pausing to stare at each photograph and remember. Her heart filled with love and warmth as she revisited all the memories. “I have lived a good and full life.” She said closing the book. Sighing to herself she closed her eyes and leaned back to rest.

A knock on the door jolted her awake. There was another knock.

“Coming.” She called in her gentle voice. She rose to her feet grasping the arm of the chair for support. She straightened as much as her body allowed, then shuffled her way to the door. She unlocked the door and opened it slightly to peek out.

“Grandma! Hi!” Sara and Julian grinned up at her.

“Hello! Come in! Come in!” Willa backed up, letting her grandkids in before closing the door. “Sit. I'll get some cookies.”

“Hey Grandma, what's this book?” Sara called from the living room.

Willa shuffled in from the kitchen carrying a tray of cookies and milk. “Come, sit. Let me show you.”

They settled on the couch, Sara on one side of Willa and Julian on the other. Willa carefully opened the book and rested her hand on the photo. “This is Grandpa Matt.”

“Is that you?” Sara asked pointing to the next photo. “You look so young.”

“Yes, we were. We'd just been married.” Willa said patting Sara's hand.

My Short Short for the Day

Sue yawned and stretched until her joints popped. She breathed in the scent of frying fish and fruit tea. Her stomach growled in response. She deftly rolled up her sleeping mat and packed her bag. Then she carefully made her way down to the lake. She splashed the ice cold water in her face and lost her breath for a moment. As she opened her eyes the blur in front of her knocked her onto her butt.

“Gerry. Gerry!” Her voice was pitched higher than normal.

“Sue? Are you ok?” Gerry so the fear in her stiff pose. “What's wrong?”

“Gerry.” Sue turned to Gerry. “I...I...can see.”

“What? How? What do you mean?” Gerry knelt by Sue taking her head in his hands and staring straight into her eyes. “Can you see me?”

Sue smiled and gently eased Gerry back. “Everything is blurry but I can make out shapes and colors. Nothing clear, though.”
“Oh, Sue. I...I can't believe it.” Gerry sat back hard on his butt. “How did this happen?”

“I don't know. I woke up like normal and walked down here to wash up before breakfast. I splashed my face and...” Sue stopped and stared toward the lake. “The water. It must be the water.”
“But it's not the right place. Edgar said it was farther along. Didn't he?” Gerry rose and briskly walked to the edge of the lake. He leaned over staring into the water before dipping his hand in. The water slid through his fingers. He tasted the water and sniffed it. “Seems like normal water.”

“Test it Gerry. That's the only way to know. Test it.” Sue crawled to the edge and leaned over. Staring into the clear blue until she could almost see the pebbles at the bottom. Time passed unnoticed as she marveled at the blueness of the water and the shine of the sun glinted off it.

“It's it! The water! This is it! I don't know how but we found it!” Gerry all but danced back to the lake. “I can't believe it!”

Sue turned to get her very first look at Gerry, the man she had loved her whole life. Her best friend, her companion, her husband. The man she would spend eternity with. Her heart pounded as she looked up at his face. That beautiful, strong, kind face she had imagined didn't compare to the reality. Her smile warmed his heart.

My Short Short for the Day

What's the point? Ella wondered. No matter what I do, it's just never good enough. She sulked at her desk twirling her pencil in one hand and resting her chin on the other. She had a good day at school but as soon as she walked in the door her dad was all over her. She didn't make her bed well enough, she didn't play hard enough in the soccer game yesterday, she didn't do well enough on her test, she didn't eat all her dinner...it just went on and on until he finally said, “Why can't you be more like your sister?”

Tears pooled in her eyes as she dropped her head to her desk. Just once she wished he would tell Mara that. Mara, so perfect. Her room was always perfectly neat, she was the best athlete in her grade, her test scores were always perfect, she never got in trouble, blah blah blah. Why couldn't Mara mess up just once? Like get an F on her test or score a goal for the other team or disappear...forever!

There was a knock on the door. “Who is it?' Ella grumbled quickly swiping at the tears.

“It's me. I brought you a snack.” Mara said. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah, sure.” Ella pretended to be hard at work studying.

“I heard Dad.” Mara set the plate on the edge of Ella's desk. “Sorry he's so hard on you.”

Ella glanced over as Mara sat on the bed. She actually looked sad.

“I wish he wouldn't compare us.” Ella finally said.

“Me, too.” Mara agreed. “It's not fair. You're so creative and musical. I wish he would realize that.”

Ella grumbled hiding her surprise.

“He puts so much pressure on you.” Mara looked at Ella. “You're pretty cool just as you are.”

Ella looked at Mara not bothering to hide her surprise anymore. “You really think so?”

“Yes, of course.” Mara laughed. “I've always been jealous of talented you are with paints and I would love to be able to play drums like you do. Dad would freak if I even thought of asking for lessons.”

Ella turned to Mara. “Thanks. I wish I could play soccer like you. And wish good grades were as easy.”

Mara smiled at Ella as she stood. “Hey, we both have our strengths, right?”

Ella smiled back. “Yeah.”

As Mara closed the door behind her, Ella whispered, “I'm glad you didn't disappear.”

My Short Short for the Day

Once upon a time there was a Snow family. They were best friends forever. Then one day they met a moose and a polar bear.

“Ooga Booga.” They said.

The moose and polar bear farted.

“Ewww!” Snowmom said.

“Smells stinky.” Snowgirl plugged her nose.

Then they met a silly starfish who was riding on Snowdad's back. It crawled onto his face and got in his way so he couldn't see. “Oh, that tickles.' He said wiggling his carrot nose.

“Hee hee.” The starfish giggled.

“You're kind of cute.” Snowmom said tickling the starfish.

“Can we keep her?” Snowgirl begged.

“Ok.” Snowdad said. “As long as she finds some place else to sit.

Starfish giggled again and crawled up to the top of Snowdad's head. Snowdad smiled and the whole family walked home with their new pet.

Meanwhile the moose and polar bear had followed the Snow family home. “Can we come in, too?” They asked.

“Sure.” Snowmom said holding the door open.

Then they all laid down for a nap together.

My Short Short for the Day

I started to fall. I flailed my arms desperately trying to grab hold of anything. I came up empty. I didn't know what else to do, so I accepted my fate. It was stupid. I was stupid. Not paying attention to what I was doing and backed into a foot stool. I was moving fast enough that I couldn't stop my momentum. I wanted to save myself but knew after those few seconds, it wasn't meant to be. I was falling wrong, I couldn't correct it. I'd bend my neck wrong. I wouldn't survive. It's strange how calmly these thoughts filled my head. I was thankful that my daughter wasn't here to see me. But she would know soon enough. What would she do? How would her life turn out? What a stupid way to die. So careless and pointless. If only I'd slowed down. If only I'd watched where I was going. If only I hadn't been so distracted. If only I could turn back the time. Why? Why now? Why me? I'm not done with my life. Why?

I landed with a crack. I went numb instantly. For a moment I had hope. My phone. I reached for my pocket but couldn't move. It was right there. Suddenly it rang. I desperately tried to grab it. I yelled at it. No good. I sighed heavily. At least I think I did. I couldn't feel anything. I wanted to cry. Maybe I did, I couldn't feel it. How long would I lay here? My head was twisted back at an angle so I could see the couch and coffee table my daughter uses to write letters to pen pals, create works of art, do her school work, read books, sticker in her albums, play, eat and have fun.

Please don't let my daughter find me. Anyone else, but her. Please let her grow up healthy and happy. Please don't let her grief ruin that. Please help her find her path in life and live fully. Please don't let me die. I want to live. There's so much I still want to do and see. So much to experience. So much left undone. Why did I waste so much time? Why did I always think there would be another day, another chance?  Just one more chance.  Please.

My Short Short for the Day

The ice began to crack. Zola screamed. Wila screamed, too, unsure if she should run for help or stay to help her sister. Zola screamed again. Wila grabbed a branch and flopped onto her stomach. She inched out onto the ice praying the ice would hold. She stretched out as far as her arm would go but the branch wasn't long enough.

The ice cracked again, louder this time and Zola screamed. Wila looked up as Zola shot down through the hole in the ice. “No!” She inched further onto the ice, ignoring the frozen chill settling into her body. She ignored her chattering teeth and the icy rawness of her exposed face.

The ice cracked once more. Very close to Wila. She stopped and remained still. Willing the ice to stop cracking but the sun above was leaving puddles on the surface. Wila inched forward again, moving faster. She didn't have time to be so cautious anymore. Zola's head bobbed up to the surface. She looked blue. She was too cold to scream but her eyes glazed with fear.

The ice cracked right beneath Wila. She didn't have time to scream before plunging into the icy depths. The shock stole her breath. She struggled to grasp the slick ice. She turned to see where Zola was but couldn't see her head bobbing in the water anymore. “Zola!” Her scream drifted into the emptiness.

The ice cracked every time Wila grabbed hold. It was no longer solid. There was no way to crawl across it anymore. They were out in the middle of the pond. So far to swim and claw their way across the chunks of ice. And Zola. Where was Zola?

The ice cracked one last time. The sun melted the ice chunks around Wila, yet the icy water remained cold. She knew there wasn't much time. She'd have to dive down, but would she be able to make it back up. She couldn't think of that now. She dove down, grabbed Zola and pushed off the bottom as hard as her legs would allow. She shot out of the surface, clasping Zola's limp body tightly. Blocking out all else, she swam one armed toward the shore. She didn't hear the screams or see the people running out of the woods. She only saw the shore and felt the weight of her sister's life.

Strong hands lifted her and Zola easily out of the water. They were both wrapped in many warm blankets and laid down next to a roaring fire. When did this all get here? Wila thought.

“You're safe now Wila.” A familiar voice said close to her ear. “And you saved Zola. She'll be alright.”

Wila could only manage a weak smile before succumbing to the sleepiness.

My Short Short for the Day

“No! Let go of me!” Yoli yelled twisting her wrist and yanking her arm back, just like Sensei Don had taught her. The sound of her heart thundered in her ears but she ignored it. “Let go of me!”

With a quick jerk, she swung her fist up into the stranger's face causing a bloody nose. The stranger screamed, clutching his nose and stumbling backwards. He tripped and fell to the ground making a loud thud as his head hit the concrete. Yoli kicked him in the stomach as hard as she could then ran. Several adults were rushing toward her.

“Are you ok?” A woman asked kneeling down in front of Yoli.

“Yes. I'm alright but that man there tried to grab me.” Yoli pointed toward the fallen stranger.

“Stay here. I'll call the police.” A man said walking toward the stranger's still body.

“Let's call your parents.” The kind woman said taking Yoli's hand and leading her to the front desk.

Yoli waited quietly in the comfy chair watching the commotion as the police showed up and escorted the stranger out of the store. He was groggy but able to walk for the most part.

“Yoli? Honey, are you ok?” Yoli's mother grabbed her into a big hug. “Are you hurt? What happened?”

“I'm ok Mom.” Yoli had often told her mother she was too old for hugging in public, but today, she'd make an exception. “I did just as Sensei Don has been teaching us for years. I even remembered to yell in his face as loud as I could.”

“She is a very brave young lady.” The kind woman said. “She knocked that guy out cold all by herself.”

Yoli's mother finally let go and took a step back. “You did good kid.” She said before pulling Yoli into another hug.

Yoli smiled.

My Short Short for the Day

“Ahhhhh!” Gaby sat up quick. Sweat drenching her face. The sheets tangled around her. That dream again. That horrible vision. Why won't it stop!

“Are you ok Honey?” Her mother pulled her in close for a hug.

“It was the dream again.” Gaby wept bitterly while her mother stroked her hair.

“Tell me about Sweetie. Maybe it'll help.” Her mother said.

“It's a beautiful morning. The sun shining bright above. The air warm and clear. A gentle wind whispering through the trees. I'm in a wide open field full of soft, green grass and brightly colored flowers. I hear the birds singing in the trees and the squirrels chattering as they gather nuts. I feel happy, happier then I've ever felt. So at peace, so calm. I feel...wonderful.” Gaby wiped her eyes dry and sipped some water.

“Sounds lovely.” Her mother brushed some from Gaby's brow and tucked it behind her ear.

“It is.” Gaby smiled savoring the memory for a few moments before the frown returned. “Then all I can see is this eye. It fills my view, blocking out the entire world. It stares at me. Stares into me. My soul turns to ice. I try to move but I'm frozen in place. I can't see anything except that eye. I yell at it. 'What do you want'. But it doesn't answer. It doesn't blink. It doesn't look away. It just stares.”

“Shhh! It's ok now Honey.” Her mother pulled her into her arms and rubbed her back. “You're safe now.”

Gaby closed her eyes and clung to her mother as the tears began again. Then a sudden cold chill raced up her spine and her heart began to pound. She opened her eyes and all she could see was the eye, staring silently at her.

My Short Short for the Day

“You go first.” Max said shoving Ian.

“No way! You go!” Ian jerked his arm away. “I'm staying right here.”

The boys peeked at the darkness from the safety of the tree limb hanging over it. The day was warm with a gentle breeze and the boys had headed out early to hunt for small game. Their parents didn't really expect them back any time soon so the boys had hours to do as they pleased. Early in their adventure they saw this darkness in the path. At first they thought it was a mud puddle from the rain the night before but as they got closer, they saw it was strange. Not quite right.

They wanted a closer look but from a safe distance. Max saw the tree overhanging the puddle and scrambled up with Ian close on his heels. They stretched onto their bellies and inched out almost to the end of the branch. Holding tightly they leaned over staring into the darkness.

“What is it?” Max whispered reaching out his hand.

“Don't do that.” Ian said pulling Max's hand back.

“Quit it.” Max jerked his hand away scowling at Ian. “I just want to touch it.”

“We should go.” Ian said inching backwards. “Get an adult or something.”

“No, not yet."  Max said swinging down to the ground.

“Hey Max. Stop!” Ian scurried down the tree.

Max squatted by the darkness and reached out his hand again. “It feels...soft and smooth. Kind of...”

“Max!” Ian shouted as the darkness wrapped around Max's wrist and yanked him in. “Max!

My Short Short for the Day

This looks like a nice place to rest, Bee said to himself settling onto the soft, fuzzy cushion. Ahh! Bee closed his eyes and quickly fell asleep. He jerked awake suddenly when he felt a tingle in his wings. He didn't move, instead he remained still giving himself a chance to look around. He didn't see anything that looked like danger, so he moved.

“Momma! Momma! He's moving. He's alive!” The little voice sounded very close.

“Don't touch him Honey!”

Bee froze again in fear. He didn't dare move or look around. His peaceful spot of serenity had changed completely. Not so long ago he thought he had found paradise. But now it looked like his end was near.

“What do we do Momma?” The little voice was closer now but Bee couldn't see what it came from.

The woman moved too fast for Bee to react. He was soon covered by a clear object. Immediately his instincts kicked in and he flew around his enclosure furiously trying to find a way to escape.

“See, then slip a piece of paper underneath. Gentle.” Bee could now see the little girl. She didn't seem threatening but a bug could never be sure.

Bee watched as the woman lifted his enclosure and walked away from his comfy resting spot. The little girl opened the door and they two walked out. They walked a little ways then stopped by a tall tree.

“This looks like a good spot Momma.” The little said with a smile.

Maybe I can fly out before they crush me. Bee thought preparing himself to dash the moment he saw a crack in the enclosure.

The woman set the cup down and slid the paper from under it. “Ok, Honey, now step back.”

The little moved back a few paces and the woman tipped the cup over before quickly stepping back herself.

Bee couldn't believe his luck. He shot out of the cup and up into the air. I'm free! I'm free! He shouted soaring into the air. I'm fr...

“Oh, Momma! He hit that tree.” The little girl said.

“It's ok Honey. He'll be alright.” The woman said taking the little girl's hand.

“Silly Bee.” The girl said.

My Short Short for the Day

It's time. She told herself calmly folding her shirt before placing it in the suitcase. It's long overdue, but at least I'm taking that step now. She had thought of this moment so many times but it had always filled her with such fear, terror of being alone. But now, as she closed the lid and listened to the click of the latch, she felt only calm. This was the right thing for her. It was time.

She loaded the last of the suitcases into the van and drove down the street. After she had put several miles behind her, she turned on the radio and hummed to the tune. As dark settled in, she pulled into the motel parking lot. She paid for her room and grabbing a small bag, locked up the van and went into the room. She slept soundly for the first time in years.

The morning sun peeked through the curtains waking her gently. She smiled, letting the sun warm her face. After washing and dressing, she checked out of the motel and hit the road. After several hours she came to a small town. It looked so peaceful, so unassuming. There were trees everywhere, a water fountain at the center, and people walking around leaving their cars at home. The sun was warm surrounded by clear blue skies. The air was fresh as she breathed in deeply.

She pulled over to the curb and turning the engine off. Nearby she saw a small park with a tiny pond in the middle. There were beautiful flowers blooming and soft green grass covering the entire area. She got out of her van and closed the door, locking it out of habit. She stepped onto the curb and walked toward the park. The sun sent welcoming rays toward her.

She was home.

My Short Short for the Day

“Wait! Stop! You'll get killed!” The urgency saturated his words.

“I have to go.” Affa said calmly even as the tears glistened in her eyes.

“But...” She stopped his words with a kiss then turned away, dashing into the fire.

She ran fast, pushing her legs until they went numb. Then she glided along in a fog. The fire has only burned for the first few moments then the sensation was only one of painless heat. She had no idea what lay beyond the fire, but it didn't matter. She had to go. This was her destiny. She had resisted at first but realized her life and more importantly, the lives of all those in her village and beyond were at stake. Her doubts and fears didn't matter. She had to succeed. She had no choice. It was her destiny.

“Can she do it?” Sanat asked.

“She will do what she has to.” Jerget said gently touching his lips, feeling the last of the kiss fade. “It's her destiny.”

Affa felt the change in the air before the cool water misted her face. She didn't slow her pace but did allow a moment of relief to pass through her as the heat dissapated. Soon the cool water turned to icy cold on her skin. A shiver raced through her but her pace did not slow. Don't think, she reminded herself locking her mind to the feelings churning inside her.

“How long should we wait?” Sanat asked fidgeting.

“Until she returns.” Jerget said never taking his eyes off the flames.

My Short Short for the Day

She took a deep breath trying to calm her racing pulse. Why did she agree to meet him here? It was crazy. She hadn't seen him in 20 plus years. They had dated in High School but ended as friends each going their separate ways. They hadn't talked in years and suddenly last month, they bumped into each other online. It started out as reminiscing about the old days. Then they started talking about what had happened since High School. The friendship was easily rekindled, like no time had passed. But maybe it had only been the safety of being online that allowed them to feel so comfortable sharing such intimate details of their lives.

She was too old to feel like a foolish teenager going on her first date. This wasn't even a date. She had mentioned planning a visit to her parent's house and he had casually said they should meet. She readily agreed and here she was. It wasn't a date. It wasn't...anything. Then why was she so nervous? Why were her palms sweating and her heart pounding in her chest? Why was she acting like a school girl?

“Hi.” His voice sounded just as she had remembered it.

She turned around and smiled. He looked a lot like he had years ago. A few more pounds but not too much. Shorter hair but it suited him. His clothing was toned down and more casual. The dark angst look was gone but the mischief was still glimmering in his beautiful eyes.

He took a step and looked into her eyes. He raised his hand and gently caressed her cheek. She closed her eyes and lost herself in his kiss.

My Short Short for the Day

Sarla raced down the dirt path leaving a cloud of dust behind her. Sweat dripped down her face and soaked her shirt. Her muscles screamed at the abuse but she wouldn't slow down, she couldn't. She hurdled a fallen tree and ducked beneath low hanging branches. As she crested the hill she saw it. Finally! It looked just like Arnin had described. The beauty of it was breathtaking. Sarla gazed on it for several minutes before shaking herself.

She took a deep breath then plunged into the shrubbery and raced down the hill to the bottom of the waterfall. She reached the pond and stooped to take a long drink. With her thirst quenched she reached out and grabbed a vine. Slowly she crawled and climbed her way up the steep cliff. Just over halfway up she paused and there was the opening. Arnin told her there was a tiny ledge she'd have to cross behind the water to get to the middle.

She took another deep breath and inched her way across the little ledge. She didn't dare look down. She had no desire at all to see how high up she was. She inched forward and froze. There it was. The tiny little pink flowers with soft blue petals. She stretched out and plucked several flowers. Tucking them into her pouch she straightened and started to inch her way back out from behind the waterfall.

She scrambled back down the cliff and was about to set her foot on the edge of the pond when she heard a noise from above. The rocks tumbled down before she could move. She clung to the cliff and squeezed her eyes shut tight. Several rocks banged against her but she held strong. Finally the noise subsided and she opened her eyes.

My Short Short for the Day

Peg looked out across the water. Sure hope it's this calm tomorrow, she thought. A triathlon. Her very first one. She'd trained so long, spent so many hours building up muscles and endurance and speed. Her mental fitness was in top notch shape as well. But she was nervous. What if she goes out too fast and cramps up? What if she pops a tire or crashes? What if she hits the wall and simply collapses? What if...? Well, there were a ton of those to think of but why waste the time. She had a very long day ahead of her tomorrow. Plenty of time to contemplate what ifs. Right now, she needed to clear her mind and relax. Today was a short, easy run and now it was time to cool down before dinner. She always ate a big spaghetti dinner the night before a running race. Tonight would be no different.

Well, that's not entirely true. Tonight was different. There was one big difference. Her coach, the man who had first introduced her to running, the man who had been her coach from the first moment she tied on sneakers until just one short month ago. He had always been there for her. Running beside until age weakened his knees, then using a car to meet her at different points during her run. Always planning her schedule and pushing her to go faster. Always reminder her never to give up, never to quit.

Then one day he didn't show up at her house at 6am banging on the door as usual. She waited around for 15 minutes then called his house. He was gone. Died in his sleep. It wouldn't be the same now. It'd never be the same.

Her mother came up behind her and touched her back. “Honey, dinner's ready.”

“Thanks Mom.” Peg said putting her arm around her mother and walking inside.

“I'm so proud of you Honey. No matter what happens tomorrow.” Her mother said warmly. “And you're father is so very proud, too.”

Peg hugged her mother tightly. “Thanks Mom.”

My Short Short for the Day

Sidney admired the beautiful view even while the tears silently rolled down her cheeks. It was two years ago today that her daughter and husband had disappeared. The investigators had searched for months but with no clues or leads. They had finally been forced to push it aside when a bigger case came up. Sidney had continued on her own but with no luck. Ginny and Ed had simply vanished off the face of the earth.

Everyone told her she had to move on but she just couldn't. She had lost weight, had been unable to maintain her job and was fired, had run through all her savings and eventually was forced to move back in with her parents. She had gone to a counselor, a psychologist and even a psychiatrist but they all felt she needed strong medication. She refused.

She had eventually stopped talking about that night, the last night she'd seen them. No one believed her. The police felt Ed had kidnapped Ginny but they couldn't explain why. Sidney knew that Ed would never do such a thing. But as time passed, even Ed's family had begun to believe that it might be true. Her parents had bought her a ticket to this island and forced her to take a vacation in the hopes she would find a way to put it all to rest.

The island was lovely and the hotel room was amazing, but Sidney couldn't help feeling guilty for taking time off from searching. Oh, Ginny. Where could you be? And Ed, I hope you are with her, protecting her. Where are you both?

My Short Short for the Day

Sidney collapsed to the ground. She could feel the warmth of heat surrounding her. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked around. She was home. The darkness was gone. She was lying on the couch and the sun was peeking through the curtains and shining on her face. She sat up rubbing her neck. On the table she saw a little blue mouse Ginny had just got yesterday. It was her treasure. Sidney smiled. Oh, what a horrible night. Her dreams had faded but left behind a feeling of despair in the pit of her stomach. She stood and stretched her arms high over her head. With a big yawn she rubbed her lower back to work out a kink and then walked into the kitchen. She filled a glass with water and took a long drink. The coolness soothed her throat. Carrying the glass she walked down the hall to Ginny's room.

“Time to get up Sleepyhead.” She said walking into the room.

She saw the empty bed and smiled. “Ok, silly goose. Where are you hiding?”

Sidney searched the closet and under the desk. Then she got on the floor and looked under the bed. Nothing.

“Where are you?” Sidney laughed walking into the hallway. “I'm going to find you.”

Sidney walked down the hall and into her bedroom. “Are you in here Sweetie?”

There were no sounds. Sidney's joy started to fade. And where was Ed? She searched under the bed, in the closet, in the bathrooms and every possible place a child could fit, but nothing. Ed was no where either. They must have gone to the store or something. Sidney breathed a sigh. That had to be it. She was being foolish because of those dreams. She shook her head. Just being foolish.

The phone rang and Sidney picked it up. “Hello?” There was no sound from the earpiece. The ringing continued but it was coming from Ginny's room.

Sidney frowned and walked into her daughter's room. She looked through the toy bin following the ringing sound. Then she found the toy phone. How could it be ringing. Sidney looked it over. No batteries, no mechanical parts. How is it possible? The ringing continued.

“Hello?” Sidney said holding it up to her ear.

“Mommy, is that you?” Ginny's voice was soft. “Where are you?”

My Short Short for the Day

“Mommy? Where are you? I can't see you.” Ginny's voice came from the creature but the body didn't move.

“Ginny?” Sidney knelt beside the limp body cradling the head.

Ginny's eyes popped open and her mouth twisted into a smile. “Oh, there you are. Where are we?”

“It's ok Sweetie. I'm right here.” Sidney lifted her little body into her arms. “I'll get you out of here.”

Sidney turned away from the skeleton and began to run back the way they had come. It was pitch dark again. The light was behind her. She ran anyways, desperate to get home. She ran faster trying to outrun the tears threatening to spill from her eyes. She crashed into a wall and fell backwards. She had smashed her face against it but she was too numb to feel the pain yet. She picked up Ginny and inched forward slowly this time.

Then she heard the scraping sound again. It was behind her. Getting closer. She moved quicker. There was a small patch of light ahead. She moved faster toward it holding out a hand to give her a few seconds warning of anymore walls. Ginny didn't move or speak. She felt light, too light.

They got closer until finally the light surrounded them. Sidney stopped to look down at Ginny and screamed. The little girl's face was covered in blood. She wasn't breathing. The wall, she had gotten crushed when Sidney had run into the wall. “No!” She screamed.

My Short Short for the Day

Suddenly the creature stopped. Sidney nearly ran into it but caught herself just short of making contact. She sucked in her breath and demanded her heart to stop thundering in her chest. The flashing lights stopped moving and dimmed to almost a pitch black. There was only silence surrounding them. Almost silence, there was a noise, faint and distant...or was it? It sounded like a scraping of something sharp along a rock. Sidney strained to hear better. A shiver raced up her spine as the hair on her arm stood on end. The sound had stopped and the darkness was complete. She couldn't see her own hand less than an inch from her face.

The sound started again but it was right behind her. She wanted to jump but fear froze her in place.

“Don't worry Mommy.” The creature whispered. “He's here now.”

The cold, icy fingers of the creature grasped Sidney's hand. It was all she could do not to yank it away. As they walked a light spread before them, leading them forward. Sidney looked around but it was a thick blanket of darkness around them. Only the narrow strip in front of them was lit. They walked for several minutes then the creature dropped Sidney's hand and collapsed to its knees. It lay on the ground like a rag doll, limp and lifeless and looking exactly like Ginny.

Sidney clasped her hands over her mouth. She wanted to scream, rage against who ever was doing this, but terrified to make a sound. Another sound and she looked up. She stared willing her eyes to focus in on the being sitting high up on a throne a few feet away. Slowly the image cleared and it was a skeleton. Not creepy at first but the longer she stared the more it morphed into something from a nightmare. This was a nightmare. It had to be. Why couldn't she wake up though. Sidney cried silently.

My Short Short for the Day

Sidney opened her eyes but was too terrified to look around. She fixed her gaze on the striped socks of the creature that was following Ed. They were Ginny's socks, but it was definitely not Ginny wearing them. What was that creature and where was Ginny? Was she ok? Was she safe? Maybe she had run out of the house, escaped to the neighbors. She could only hope.

“Here we are Mommy.” The creature said with a smile.

Ed set Sidney down. She stood, looking up and felt an immediate lurch in her stomach. Swallowing hard, she forced the bile back down. What was this place? “Ed? Are you in there?”

Ed stared right through her.

“Daddy can't hear you anymore.” The creature said cheerfully skipping by. “Come on Mommy, I have so much to show you.”

Sidney walked carefully, shielding her eyes from the flashing lights that threatened to make her sick. She had to concentrate on finding a way out. How could she escape and where would she go? She looked behind her to pick out some object, some landmark to remember how to get home. Home. Why was this happening? How? No, enough of that. It didn't matter how or why or any of that. Escape. That's all that mattered. And not throwing up. Those lights were making it very hard to see and to forget her twisting stomach.

My Short Short for the Day

Ed sat up with a glassy stare. He was looking toward Sidney but he wasn't seeing anything. Sidney's scream stuck in her throat. She could only look in horror as Ed slowly rose to his feet and walked toward her. Sidney was paralyzed in fear.
Ed leaned over grabbing Sidney's arms and pulling her to her feet. His hands were icy cold s they dug into her flesh.

“Ed? What are you doing?” Sidney pleaded. “Stop. You're hurting me. Ed?!”

“Don't worry Mommy. Daddy is fine...now.” The little creature spoke with Ginny's voice but didn't resemble her in any other way. The creature looked up to Ed. “Bring her this way.”

Ed lifted Sidney off her feet and laid her over his shoulder. “Ed! Let me down! Ed! Wake up!”

“He's not sleeping Mommy. He can't hear you anymore.” The creature said with a smile before ducking under the bed and crawling to the farthest corner.

Sidney winced as Ed knelt down still carrying her. She closed her eyes and held her breath. Ed moved quickly. How they fit under the bed, Sidney didn't know but soon they were in a cold, dark tunnel. Where were they going and how could this be happening? Was it still a nightmare?

My Short Short for the Day

As Sidney rocked her daughter, Ed finally shook his head and turned to them. “I just don't know what to make of it. I mean, it's just not possible to vanish.”

“Well, they can do that in your comics Daddy.” Ginny said.

“Yeah but that's not real.” Ed said with a smile.

The family sat silent for several minutes. Sidney just couldn't wrap her mind around it. She'd read ghost stories before and watched plenty of movies but never believed in supernatural beings. How else could she explain what she saw. She yawned uncontrollably. Maybe it was a nightmare. Maybe she was still asleep. She closed her eyes for a moment.

“You're not dreaming Mommy.”

Sidney opened her eyes at the sound of her daughter's voice. She screamed and dropped the creature as if being burned. She scrabbled away as fast as possible but bumped into the bookshelf. She looked toward Ed but he was sound asleep on the floor next to the bed. He wasn't moving.

The creature stood and walked toward Sidney. The creature spoke with Ginny's voice. Sidney's eyes darted around the room. Where was Ginny?

“Ed!” Sidney screamed reaching around for anything solid to grab. “Ed!”

My Short Short for the Day

“I don't know.” Sidney said slowly getting to her feet.

There was a soft sound and Sidney bolted out of the room. She rushed into the other bedroom and threw herself on the floor.

“Are you ok Sweetie?” Sidney reached in to grab her daughter's hand.

“Yes, Mommy.” Ginny's voice was very soft and she was clutching her stuffed unicorn. “I'm scared.”

Sidney helped her daughter out and pull her into her arms. Ed sat on the bed still looking confused.

“What happened?” He finally said.

Sidney snuggled Ginny close in her arms. “I feel asleep on the couch. The click of the door closing woke me up. I was a little dazed at first but I saw two shadows go by. I grabbed the dumbbell. I didn't know what else to get. They went into our bedroom so I stopped at Ginny's and told her to hide under the bed. Then I went to our bedroom and they were whispering. I couldn't tell what they were saying. I just lunged at the closest one. I know I hit him but then...it's like the light came on and they disappeared.”

Ed tugged at his beard looking downward, staring at nothing in particular.

My Short Short for the Day

The gentle click of the door jolted Sidney awake. She had stayed up late working and while the computer shut down she checked on her daughter, sprawled across the bed and sleeping soundly. Then she made her way down the hall to her bedroom where her husband was also sprawled across the bed sleeping soundly. Walking back down the hall she couldn't help but smile at her two bed hogs. She fluffed the throw pillow and unfolded the quilt then settled down on the couch. With a huge yawn she shut off the light and lay down. She thought she'd have trouble falling asleep, but the next thing she heard was the gentle click of the door. Her head was a bit fuzzy with sleep but instincts told her not to move. She looked toward the sound only moving her eyes. There were two shadows that moved down the hall. Fear choked her but she swallowed hard. Her daughter. Her thoughts raced as she silently slid off the couch. She was in motion and had to act without time for a lot of thought.

Grabbing the dumbbell tucked under the TV stand she rose to her feet. A quick breath for courage and she glided down the hall. The shadows had moved straight to the back room. Her husband. She could here him snoring. She ducked into her daughter's room. She covered her mouth and lifted her to a sitting position. Her daughter woke with a start and seeing her mother's eyes, quickly quieted.

“Under the bed, far back corner. Stay there.” Sidney whispered.

Her daughter nodded and immediately crawled down. Sidney paused at the doorway to check that she was hidden, then glided down the hall. She paused outside the partially closed door and heard whispers. She couldn't understand what was being said. What to do? No time to panic or hesitate. She had to act. People don't break into your house for good reasons.

She slipped through the door and lunged toward the nearest shadow swinging the dumbbell with all her might. Her arm shook with the tremor of making contact. The lights suddenly came on and she fell to the floor. She looked toward the light switch. Her husband was standing there looking down at her.

“What was that?” His eyes mirrored her shock.

My Short Short for the Day

The night was dark and dreary, as any good Halloween night should be. The air was chilly with a hint of wood smoke simmering among the trees. The ghosts rustled in their hiding spots, waiting for the unsuspecting to walk by. Vampires were pushing up their coffin lids and stretching after their day's rest. Witches stirred their brew, chanting their spells into the green smoke. Goblins sharpened their claws and teeth while dreaming of tasty treats to come. Zombies clawed their way out of their graves, reattaching parts that may have fallen off.

Inside the homes where warm lights glowed in the windows, eager children hurried through dinner. Dressing into their costumes took some time but there were giggles and squeals the whole time. Makeup was painted on their bright shiny faces, clothing was snugged on their wiggly bodies. Masks and mittens placed carefully on their faces and hands. Once shoes were laced up and tied snug, baskets were handed out and front doors opened.

The creatures of the night were lined up ready to scare.

The children were lined up ready to trick or treat.

It would be a night to remember for all.
