My Short Short for the Day

Deedee stepped into the beam of light and closed her eyes. She couldn't help it. The ride always freaked her out so she handled it much better when she couldn't see everything whizzing by at a ridiculous speed. She started to feel dizzy and held her breath hoping to avoid throwing up. Finally the wind settled around her and she was on solid ground again. She opened her eyes and took several deep breaths until the nausea disappeared. She walked slowly toward the old brick building. It was a typical spring day. Her sweater was perfect for keeping the slight chill at bay and it was colorful, which always cheered her up when she had to come to the Hall. There was nothing unusual about her presence being requested at the Hall. Twice a year all students had to report to the headmasters. But for some reason she had a sense of concern. She hadn't done anything wrong so it wasn't about punishment. Her grades were excellent and her behavior appropriate. She got along very well with her teachers and classmates so it couldn't be a complaint. It was the right time of year for her review, but still...something just felt...not right.

She reached the building and pulled the heavy door open. Then walked slowly down the hallway listening to her shoes echo in the emptiness. She climbed the stairs up to the second floor and followed the hallway to the last door on the right. Outside she paused and took a calming breath. Straightening her shoulders she turned the knob and pushed open the door.

“Mom? What are you doing here?” She quickly cut herself off and blushed before regaining her composure.

The head of languages gestured for her to take a seat and she nodded. Once settled in her seat she stared straight ahead at the table where all the headmasters sat.

“Thank you Deedee for joining us.” Celee said. “Now let's begin the review.”
